USB Flash memory devices can't be stopped

Hello all.

I've noticed this problem on several different Win2000 systems.

I have a number of those "jump disk" or other USB Flash Memory
"keychain" type microdrive devices which I use on various Win2000
machines. They all work just fine except that on all of these
machines, about 50% of the time when you try to use the "Stop USB Mass
Storage Device" function, it comes back with a message saying "The
device "Generic volume" cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the
device again later."

Of course, once you've gotten this message, there is no way you'll
ever be able to successfully stop the device properly. The only
choice is to just yank it out anyway and then be told that you've
"improperly removed" the device with various possible dire
consequences, or you have to actually turn off the computer and remove
the device.

In all cases, there is never any memory loss or problems, it's just
that the PC seems to think that it can't "release" the drive. It
doesn't matter how long you wait, it never will release it.

I'm wondering if this might be due to Norton's antivirus or some other
program having some sort of "claim" on the drive or a particular file
or folder.

It seems to be common to all win2000 systems that I've tried.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't, but I've never lost any data
even if I just give up and unplug the device without stopping it
properly.

I've used three different brands of these memory units and they all do
this.

Anyone else ever heard of this?

Thanks

Jim

I've only noticed this behavior after installing EZ-CD Creator and it
happens on USB Flash Memory drives as well as USB DVD/CDRW Combo drives. If
you think it is Norton, the easiest way is to stop Defwatch and the
Norton/Symantec service and then try to dismount the removable drive.
