I just bought a Transcend 512 meg JetFlash disk. Whenever
I plug it into my Compaq Armada laptop it causes it to
reboot, do a check of the hard disk start up and then
reboot again. sometimes it gives a blue screen with page
faulr in non-paged area (I think).
i downloaded SP4 and all the available updates, but it
contineues to do the reboot thing
Any ideas?
Thanks
David

Are other USB devices working fine on the laptop? Did u try the flash disk
on a different computer? If it works on a different computer, but not on the
laptop, follow the steps given below to reinstall USB ports:

1. Right-click My Computer icon on the desktop, and then select
Properties.
2. Click the Hardware tab.
3. Click the Device Manager button.
4. Click the (+) sign to the left of Universal Serial Bus controllers.
5. Right-click the device listed under Universal Serial Bus controller
and select Uninstall.
6. Click OK to confirm the removal of the device.

NOTE: Repeat steps 5 and 6 until all the devices under Universal
Serial Bus Controller are removed.

7. Shut down the computer.

CAUTION: Ensure that the Shut Down option is selected, instead of
the Restart option.

8. Wait for 5 seconds and then restart the computer. When the
computer restarts, a "Windows has detected new or added hardware"
message window will open.

NOTE: You will have to insert the Windows CD-ROM into the
CD drive, if prompted.

The above steps will refresh the USB ports.

I hope this helps.

I had a similar problem plugging USB drives into an IBM Thinkpad A30
with Windows 2000 Professional this week. I would get a Blue Screen of
Death immediately (or during) the loading of the USB driver.

I finally solved the problem by going into the BIOS Setup (press F1
during the initial boot) and then disabling the USB BIOS support on the
Config page. (The onscreen help says the USB BIOS support needs to be
enabled only if you are booting your machine from a FDD attached to a
BIOS port.)

I suspect that my USB drives were getting confused with conflicts
between the USB BIOS support and the Windows 2000 USB driver support.

The Thinkpad still does a reboot after loading the driver (my Windows
XP machines don't reboot at this stage), but when the machine comes
back up, the USB drives work fine, and I can plug and unplug them as
normal from then on.
