USB Flash Drive access

I plug a USB Flash drive into a USB port and get presented with an option
dialog box. I choose view files and very briefly if I am quick enough I can
see a file list, a drive letter etc and then the drive and files are no
longer able to be seen in the list of objects from Computer. Moreover if I
try to access the drive by letter it is not recognised.

If I do the same with a removable USB hard drive, I get to see all the usual
files and folders.

This would appear to be some aspect of security acting in my view
inappropriately and locking out access to removable media of different types
in different ways.

I am an administrator on my system and I should have unrestricted access to
files on inserted media.

Can anyone tell me why this is so and how to configure things so I can
access all inserted media.

No, USB Flash drive are basic plug n play devices. I don't see why there
should be a need.

How would this help?

The mere fact that if you have Computer Management snap-in open and that it
recognises the drive on insertion and then within seconds removes it
automatically, must mean it is permissions or security related. Drivers just
do not fit the bill to me in this scenario.
