Hi,
After plugging in a 1 gig Sandisk flash; I wanted to defrag it. Going to
properties; I chose defrag; as usual; but now;doing so takes me the the
$#$%$@% general defrag gui; which then proceeds to try to defrag my
harddrive.
Am I missing something?
Or did this defrag functionality get dropped?
What the heck?
Jeff

Umm... Defragging a flash drive would be like defragging your ram. When
there is little or no seek time (or more specifically, the same amount of
seek time to access any portion of the drive) in a device (mostly due to the
lack of a mechanical portion), fragmentation isn't an issue. You're just
moving data around on something with a limited number of reads and writes in
its life cycle.
Unless I'm missing something...
The new defrag app does kind of suck - thank god for the addition of
scheduling, that will be a really nice addition in a domain - but having to
drop to a cli to get a somewhat detailed report is a bit annoying. Please
include a decent analize window in the final version, at lease for
Ultimate - or will that be part of live?

Very valid point... had not considered that... just stuck in "if it's
fragmented, latency will result" mode, I guess. Mayhaps someone in MS or
Executive software came to the same conslusion as you and removed it from
Vista. I just checked in Diskeeper Pro in XP and it sure does defrag flash
drives. For good or ill...
