USB fail to show flash memory

Hi

I have a 2 week old IBM T40p laptop, running XP. Using the USB ports I have previously downloaded from flashmemory in Sony digicam

Last week I updated to latest everything via IBM support web page
Via "Windows update" all else is updated
If these updates caused my present problem, I don't know

Found out last week that a connected flashmemory won't be shown as a new device in Explorer, this applies to a random sample of three different brands of flash memory
Now also the previously working Sony digicam flash memory has the same failure scenario
USB connected mouse works correctly though

As far as I can understand all drivers are there and are up to date

Sympthoms
After a connection is done, PC says "boing" (as it should) ,
processer gets busy for approx 3 secs (as it should),
driver for USB device gets loaded according to device manager (as it should),
then nothing happens.
In the end I can't access the USB device

Any tip how to proceed? Is a reinstallation of the whole OS the only remedy

I recognize your problem, something simular happened a
collegue, I try to get back with more feedback.
Good luck :-)

Hi

Try this way

Disconnect all the USB devices including the USB mouse
Start the PC and boot in safe mode with administrator previlage
Go to device manager and uninstall the USB Open Host controller and USB Enhanced Host controller(if any)
Reboot the machine and windows should find the USB controllers and load the drivers (assuming you have already installed SP1 or SP1a)
Go to device manager again and check the USB Open Host controller and USB Enhanced Host controller to ensure drivers are installed properly and windows confirmed that they are working properly
Reconnect all the USB devices each at a time. Check to ensure it works properly before connecting the other USB devices

The other way to do is to run regedit to delete the old VID subkeys for the USB devices, but it is risky if you are not familiar with regedit. Also in some cases, XP would not allow you to delete the VID subkeys in regedit

Hope it helps

Pete

Problem fixed!
----
Diagnosis:

The problem was caused by a feature/glitch in XP causing
not full plug & play.

Lately central IT in our company has allocated the G:
device to mount a NFS for everyone that is logging on.
Previously this was the first available device and was
used by USB connected flash memory.
Seems that USB system stubbornly think it still can reuse
G: although it was occupied -> problem and "no show" of
USB memory.

Remedy:
Use: My Computer / Manage / Disk Manager and Device
Manager
Rename a device in the E-F range (to get a free slot eg.
rename E: to R:)
Uninstall USB driver for USB memory (to make USB forget
about G:)
Reboot
Connect USB memory (it should now take first free device
eg. E:)

That's it!

Peter,

I am having a similar issue. I have a PQI 256Mb USB 2.0
Cool Drive and am trying to use it on a PC running WinXP
Home, SP1. The drive is recognised, and the Device Manager
seems to detect it OK (as a USB Mass Storage Device), but
when I try and do anything with it (e.g. look at what's on
it in Explorer, or try and uninstall the USB driver from
within Device Manager, my PC freezes until I disconnect
the USB drive). I don't have a problem with another USB
2.0 device (an external HDD). Should I also delete the USB
controllers as you sugegst? I can see the following in
Device Manager:

* Generic USB Hub
* Intel PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller
* Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller -24C2
* Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller -24C4
* Intel(R) 82801DB/DBM USB Universal Host Controller -24C7
* USB 2.0 Root Hub
* USB Composite Device
* USB Root Hub
* USB Root Hub
* USB Root Hub

Which should I delete and reinstall?

Many thanks in advance for your help.
