I bought a SimpleTech USB Hard Drive. It works fine but has one small
problem.
If the power to the HD is on when I boot, bootup hangs right after the
memory test.

Perhaps some BIOS setting?

This is not a windows 2000 problem, but I'll bite because I've been there.

I have an ASUS PC-DL Deluxe board, two 3.06GHz Xeon's on board. The BIOS used
to do that with _any_ powered USB device when I booted up (Flash memory stick,
scanner, etc.). Most annoying, because one day I rebooted the machine (which is
at home) from work, and could not get back on it, because it didn't come back.

A BIOS update fixed that, but introduced a 35 second delay between switching on
and any sign of life, which initially made me think I had hosed the BIOS on that
(rather expensive!) system. NOT a procedure for the faint-hearted.

I could find no BIOS option for 'mysteriously hang when USB connected', or
anything that affected the way set up device before booting. I can even boot
from an external drive now, should I want to, by either USB or Firewire, which I
could not do before.

If you cannot identify which motherboard you have, DO NOT GUESS, because
flashing the wrong BIOS will turn your PC into an expensive doorstop. Some
boards have different BIOS revisions for different revisions of motherboard, as
well as different models. Read the blurb carefully.

The above statement comes with no warranty. If you break anything, you get to
keep all of the pieces....
