usb external hard drive and file sharing

I'm running Windows XP on a small office network, I have
an external USB hard drive on one computer, with
directories that are read/write shared by the three other
computers on the network. Problem: Every so often, the
other computers cannot access the shared directories, and
when I check the status of that drive, the directories
that had the Share This Folder on the Network box checked
have somehow unchecked themselves. Any ideas why? Any
solutions? Thanks in advance.
 
Sometimes USB devices are switched off to save power
(especially in laptops). You can switch of this option in
Device Manger for USB Root Hub. Check technet.com for
details
