USB/Ethernet adapter/DSL router using NETBEUI on XP Home

Is there a way to network two computers via a DSL router when one computer is
using a USB connection and the other an ethernet card? I looked in the
networking on the USB machine and could only see an ethernet card that was
not connected (true).

I know I could do this easily with a hub inline between the PCs and the
router but don't have one.

Any help is appreciated in advance,
Dan Cox

If the USB machine has an Ethernet card, why do you want to use a USB
connection? You can connect the Ethernet card to the DSL router.

Is the USB connection a USB-to-Ethernet adapter that accepts a
standard Ethernet cable? If so, you can use it for networking. If
not, what exactly is it? What's the make and model?

There's no reason to use NetBEUI on your network. You need TCP/IP for
Internet access, so use it for File and Printer Sharing, too. NetBEUI
is an unsupported protocol in Windows XP. You can install NetBEUI,
but Microsoft hasn't tested it and doesn't guarantee that it will
work.

Dan,

In general, networking works OK with USB (though it is not my personal
recommendation). What make and model router is this? Does it specifically
support both USB and Ethernet connections being used simultaneously?

Did you load the USB networking drivers, that probably should have come with the
router? Windows supports Ethernet natively, but USB networking requires extra
drivers, which is one of the reasons why I don't like USB networking.

If the DSL "router" is a true router (not just a modem) it should have
multiple Ethernet ports and you'll want to hook each computer up to an
Ethernet port. You can't hook one computer up to (a/the) Ethernet port on
a modem and a second computer up to the USB port on the modem and have the
computers "networked". It won't work.

Hi,

You might consider using a USB-to-LAN adapter on the USB machine to get an
Ethernet connection with another Ethernet machine. The
following are some available ASIX's USB-to-LAN solutions in the market for
your reference. You can download the latest ASIX's USB-to-LAN Windows WHQL
certified drivers from ASIX's web site
(http://www.asix.com.tw/products.php?op=ProductList&PLine=71) directly.

All ASIX's USB-to-LAN drivers were qualified on ASIX's USB-to-LAN demo
boards with ASIX's default VID/PID. If these drivers couldn't work with your
USB-to-LAN adapter, you might need to contact the manufacturer's support guys
to get the correct driver. Hope this information is helpful for you to solve
your issue soon.
