USB drives lose recognition

I am running XP home, SP2 on a Pent 4 machine with 6 onboard USB 2.0 ports
and 5 more on a card. I save data and their backups to 6 remote USB hard
drives, 4 of which are connected thru a powered hub.

Lately I've been receiving "This device can perform better if you use a high
speed port. Click here for a list of high speed ports." .....all of my ports
are listed as 2.0. Also I have noticed slower transfer rates. Ever more
frequently XP stops recognizing the drives all together then finds them
again after awhile....or a reboot. Does this sound like an XP problem or
hardware problem?

Thanks,

Marian

It sounds to me like the USB ports are set to go to sleep after a while to
save power. You can disable this function in Device Manager.
