I have a laptop with 2 usb ports. Everytime I try to change
the usb port for a particular device XP asks me to
reinstall the device driver. I have to use the same usb
port that I originally installed the device for.... Why
will XP not recognize that the only difference is the usb
port and how can I solve this.

Some USB devices have a unique ID built into them that the USB port can read
and understand that you have not installed an additional device, but simply
forgotten which port you connected to... and it will simply 'swap' the
drivers over to the other port. Most do not. Therefore when you connect it
to the other port, it thinks you are installing a second instance of the
same device... and some people do indeed want this... ie they have two
identical printers and use one for (eg) draft work and one for photo
printing.

So if the device you are connecting does not have a unique ID, this is
totally by design... just try and keep the ports constant. Even lable them
perhaps to remind you which is which.
