USB drivers not installing

I'm trying to install a usb driver for my Nextel phone so
that I can use it as a modem. I have downloaded the right
driver, but when I go through the add/remove hardware
dialogue>wizard> and tell it where to find the drivers,
Windows insists that it has found a more compatible
driver. I direct to specify a location where I've put the
driver, mdmiden.inf, it checks there and then immediately
pops up with, "Windows found a driver that is a closer
match for this device than your current driver." and finds
the driver usb.inf in the WINNT folder. It won't let me
use the right driver. If it tries to install the usb.inf
file, it then brings up a message about "An error occured
during the installation of the device. The installation
failed because a function driver was not specified for
this device instance."

So how can I get windows to quite being so "helpful" and
just install the driver I've selected?

Thanks in advance,

James Murphy

One follow up, I removed the usb.inf file from the wnnt
folder temporarily, now when I try to install the driver
and direct it to the proper inf file, it now says no
suitable driver can be found. Yet I'm pointing it to the
manufacturers driver. HELP!

Ran into this interesting problem not too long ago that eventually resulted
in re-installing Windows 2000 from a backup image file. Try to force the
use of the Windows 2000 mdmiden.inf file for the Nextel phone. If failure,
then this *.inf file has been programmed incorrectly for setting up the device.
And this issue also occurs with common devices such as USB printers.

Best alternative --- use a proper modem.

Thanks for the update and info.

James

One of the mistakes commonly made with Windows is to rely on PnP and
go through the Add New Hardware wizard. IIRC, installing this driver file
requires going through the phone and modem applet in Control Panel. And
it is a manual installation by choosing the specific make of modem or phone.
But as mentioned by GRider, the "pooch might already have been screwed"
if the Windows Registry has been given the wrong "string" of information by
attempting the install via the wizard.
