Hi !! Wondered if anyone could help me in my hour of desprerate need.
My PC has stopped recognising my External Hardrive and Digital Camera. It says when I turn them on that a driver needs installing.I have never installed drivers for either of these items as they 'auto run' when I connect and turn them on. My Printer works fine but I downloaded the driver for that off a CD.
It seems the items I plug into a USB port for the PC to read like my camera and external hardrive the PC is not identifying them i.e. 'usb device not recognised'. Normally when I plug either in I get a box asking me what I wish to do with my files, i.e play music, transfer pictures etc.It seems this 'driver' that was on the PC as standard when purchased is now missing. Also normally when connecting these items I get the usual 'clunk' sound from the PC. This does not happen since my problem arose.
I have disconnected both items, unplugged them and then reconnected with no luck. I haven't deleted or updated or installed anything recently and both have worked fine within the past few days.
Can anyone help please ??? I am running Windows XP Home Edition. Service Pack 2.
Many thanks in advance.

Mike

Since my last request for help I have determined that what is missing is definately a Windows XP driver that was on the original software that came installed with the PC, the driver that autoruns and identifies devices when I switch them on via USB.

I did notice when I was looking at the drivers within Device Manager for the individual items, there was none installed. I tried to update the driver from the existing location that was the default for both products, C:\PCLEUSBDRV, there is nothing there. Could this be what is missing ?

Many thanks Mike

Which version of Windows are you using? If it's XP then if you have Service Pack 2 installed that includes the USB2 drivers.

If you don't have SP2 installed download it from Microsoft and do so.

Odd that these devices were once working but now no longer work though. You could reinstall the camera software, that may help.

Thanks for the reply floppybootstomp. I'm running windows XP service pack 2. I did all available updates last night and the drivers still wont work.

As of installing the camera software again I have never had to install any as the driver was one that was used within XP itself.

Both devices have worked fine for over 2 years. I got some error messages while saving to my external hard drive yesterday, so I turned it off, then on again and that was when the problems started. I have plugged the camera into my works PC today and it works fine on there. I also tried different USB ports at home ,again same results, 'unknown device'.

Does this help any more or do I need to re-install XP onto my PC ?

Thanks a lot, Mike

Let's not get that drastic just yet

You could try reinstalling SP2 if you have it handy or download it from MS and reinstall.

Does the hard drive work ok on other computers? As the fault may be with that hard disk becoming faulty but obviously I hope that is not the case.

And if you have a Win XP CD you could try a repair.

I'm off out now, so I'll be gone a few hours.

I'll try to download Service Pack 2 again. I'm at work at the moment so I will try when I get home in a couple of hours. I've no Windows XP Discs as XP was pre-installed upon delivery, my Windows XP software is only accessable from pressing F10 when I turn the PC on.

As of plugging the ext hard drive into another PC I'm a bit reluctant to do that in case it creates the same problem for someone else. I know the camera works fine so I'm going to hopefully get that up and running, then I will then try to open up the ext hard drive and see if I can get that to work. It was working fine up to the point of my problems as I was playing music and only stopped when I turned it off.

All I need to do now is find/download/repair the universal driver that is missing and progress from there.

I'll will try what you have suggested and report back in a few hours.

Many thanks Mike

Hi again.

I have reinstalled SP2 and there has been no change.

I have installed a driver for the camera from the Sony web site. This again did not work.

I have been in device manager and tried to uninstall the USB ports individually. I did struggle with this as my mouse and keyboard are USB driven so I*'m not 100% sure this was done properly.

The messages I get are as follows. I turn on my device and get 'USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED. One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned and windows does not recognize it'.

I click where prompted for assistance and the unknown device is highlighted in bold in a window titles USB Device not recognized. I double click on it , it does say there are no drivers installed, but still uninstall the driver.

If I then turn the camera off then back on I get 'FOUND NEW HARDWARE. Unknown device'. I then get 'Installed and ready to use'. I then get the first warning again of 'USB DEVICE NOT RECOGNIZED' and get stuck in a loop.

Has anyone any further ideas or is a full reinstall looking like a distinct possiblility ??

A complete re-install may not help.

There are many "problems" with USB, not least the one you are experiencing.

MS has, what it calls, a 'Hot Fix' for a specific problem relating to Standby & Hibernation ... one of the Power Management options we do not really need for a desktop PC ... Solution, turn it off.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/871233

Others have simply "cured" there problems by powering off the PC and removing the power cable from the mains for a few minutes.
