I downloaded everything on the CD that came with the
printer but only after I plugged the USB cable in. That's
what the 'manual' says to do but I was told from Lexmark
that I now need to download a USB port from Microsoft. I
tried to do that to no avail.
The computer place downtown says I may need to buy a USB
card ($40.00) and stick it in there and that should work.
Good grief, that's a little more than I paid for the
printer! Ok, I'm cheap, I know that.
I never used anything that needed a USB cable before so
maybe I DO need that 40 dollar USB card?? Thanks for your
help!
OK, first lets be sure we are talking about the correct version of Windows.
You are using Windows 2000, correct? Not Windows ME... Sorry, many people
get these two confused.
If its Windows 2000:
Make sure you have the latest "Service Pack" -- SP4. You can get this from
Windows Update, or from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/downloads/servicepacks/sp4/default.asp
(you can even order it on CD, if your Internet connection is too slow to
download it.)
Open up Device Manager (Control Panel--> System --> Hardware tab) and look
for any question marks or exclamation marks, especially under the USB
categories. Do you even see anything called "Universal Serial Bus
Controller" ??
Look through these general troubleshooting steps for USB under Windows 2000:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q242062
And once again, what happens when you plug the printer into the USB port?
Does anything appear on the screen?
