I have a lot of stuff stored on an external hard drive. In trying to access
some of the files this morning I find that the drive letter for the device
has changed and I have no idea how to change it back. I have tried the device
in all of the other availabe USB ports and it always says it is drive H,
previously it was drive F. The only thing I can think of that is different
is, the other day I had the external hard drive in the USB port I usually use
and a thumb drive in the one right below it, these are the only two USB ports
on the front of the machine. A pop up box came up and said something about Hi
speed and I just cancelled it and went on with the backups I was doing. I am
running Windows XP, pre installed on an eMachine. PLEASE HELP! If I can't
access this correctly I am going to have to redo my taxes. Thank you.

Right click on My Computer, choose Manage, then Disk Management.
Find your external disk drive in the list, right click on the drive and
choose Change Drive Letter and Paths.

Just because it has changed drive letter, you can still access the data on
the drive in your applications. Just choose file/open and find the drive.

Thank you so much. I knew there was a way to change it, I just couldn't remember what it was.

Yes, I could access the files, my shortcuts etc. wouldn't work. Thank you
