Is there a way to lock down the drive letter associated with an external USB
drive? If I plug in a thumb drive or other USB device before booting up,
the drive letter associated with the USB external hard drive changes.

Thanks,

If the/a hd gets unplugged & other hds replace it/them,then they get diffrent
letters.To "lock down" a hd & letter,go to run,type:diskmgmt.msc In msc,L.
click on the hd,go to actions, all, select "change hd letter/path" change
letter.

You can set the drive letter in the usual way via the disk manager. However
there are a couple of wrinkles.

If the drive letter is taken by another device before you connect the USB
drive, it will be always be allocated the next available unused letter
instead.

If the leter is available then: if the USB drive is not electronically
serial numbered it will only be allocated the letter you gave it when it is
plugged into the same USB port. If it is electronically serial numbered it
will retain the same letter when plugged into any port.

Microsoft does not seem to think this is important and does not seem
to have an official "fix" for this. However, someone did come up with
a method:
