Leaving my USB-enclosed ATA drive plugged in during boot causes the
installation of Vista CTP to hang. Turning the drive off or unplugging
causes it to continue properly.

I thought Vista was supposed to include enhanced support for USB hard drives?

Not all issues have been ironed out yet, I have no information to determine
if this has been corrected in a future build. I am sure though it will be
fixed, just don't know when, your alternative right now is unplug the drive
before booting into Windows Vista. Have you contacted the manufacturer or
check the manufacturers website? They might have work arounds or BETA
drivers available that might support Vista.

That is good news, comparatively speaking. Windows 2000 and Windows Server
2003 corrupted the partitions on USB hard drives if the drives were
connected during booting. I didn't test XP that way. Yes, hanging instead
of destroying is a huge enhancement, relatively speaking.
