Hi Alvin,
The most effective size is a minimum that replicates the normal, day-to-day
size of your pagefile with no maximum other than that which Windows allows.
Despite good intentions, the pagefile is best left to system managed and not
user-defined.
As to disabling the pagefile, as you've seen that is not a good idea. Even
if not needed, many applications will seek an allocation of pages when
initializing. If it is shutdown, not only will you get 'out of memory'
errors, you may find that some applications won't start at all.
As previously stated, speed is of the essence with the paging file. Moving
it to an external drive, regardless of how fast it is, is subject to a
bottleneck at the connection point. I have not tried it with an external
sata connection, but if your internal drive is at the same speed I doubt you
would see much improvement.
