USB Drive access problem

I have just bought a new Acer laptop Travelmate 2310.

Yesterday I could use a usb pen drive in the usb ports. Today I get
the message "G:\ is not accessible. The parameter is incorrect".
There are 3 usb ports, and all give the same message (with a different
drive letter obviously).

I also find that when I shut it down a "C:\WINDOWS\system32\check.exe"
program is always left running.

Any ideas?
