USB Disconnects constantly

I am having a problem with some USB devices, first it started with a USB
external hard drive and now it happens with a USB gamepad. The problem with
the USB Hard Drive resolved itself, because I did nothing.

The problem is that suddenly the USB device disappears, as if I disconnected
it, but suddenly it comes back again. Some times I get a blue screen, and I
know it is related to the USB device, because when the disconnection issue
arises I know I will get the blue screen.

Any idea?

in device manager under Properties for the Root Hubs and the Power tab uncheck the box for Allow to be shut off to save power.

Check the cables and connectors!
Use only highest quality cables for external drives you care for.

How can I check the cable and connectors? What cables do you recommend for a
an external drive?
