I have a Belkin 4 port USB 2.0 hub hooked up to my motherboard which
only supports 1.1 and a Sandisk Smart Card reader. Every so often the
connection between the three goes away and I have to reset it by
undoing the connection between the hub and the computer. Sometimes
reinserting the Sandisk reader works, but not always. Why is this
happening and what can I do about it. WXP Pro SP2 OS, but it was doing
it with W2K Pro SP4 also.

"The Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service service entered the
stopped state."
I don't know what the rest of your acronyms mean.

Did you D\click on the errors \warnings in the right hand pane, I was hoping
it would have, kinda pointed in the right direction. Perhaps a device err or
file problem ?. bw..J

Yes, I did. They are not Errors, they are Information messages.

I`m not gonna try to take this too seriously <g>. You may have a power prob.
on the USB port. sorry i don`t know the hub you`ve got, but the USB port can
only supply minimal current. bw..J

The USB hub is externally powered. It also has lights on each port
showing connection to the device. There is a similar light indicating
power which always remains lit. The card reader has a light showing
connection also. When there is a problem, sometimes the card reader's
light stays on and sometimes it doesn't. But the light on the hub will
always show the true state of connectivity.

Could it be that Windows attempts to put your flash drive to
sleep ?
(Indication would be a specific time interval between last use of
the device and it going down.)

It might be so. I have hooked up the card reader directly to the
motherboard to eliminate the hub. We'll see how it works for the next
few days.

It appears the culprit was the USB hub. Since having the card reader
connected directly to the motherboard port it has not shut off yet.
