I have USB Camera, i-POD, Compact-Flash, Memory stick experiencing the same
symptoms.

On initial plug-in Vista recognises the device and I am able to access as
per normal. If I remove the device and second time round plug it in (within
the same login session) Vista does not recognise it and none of my
applications can access the device.

I have not found any related support articles and wondered if it may be
something specific to my Compaq Presario 1790AN.

Hi, Rich. I'm not terribly knowledgeable about these things, but before you
remove any of your devices, you might need to go to the icon in the lower
right tray for your item and I think it's a right click to "safely disconnect
the device". I'm at work and don't know the exact wording. Anyway, you must
ask permission from Vista to disconnect a USB device. If you do this it will
ok you to remove the device. Then, you could try within the same session to
plug in another item in the same USB port. It's worth a try........
