Hello all,

I am having issues with a series of 70 Dell Latitude D505 Laptops.

These computers are Celeron M 1.3 GHz with 256 MB RAM. They use the 855GM
chipset.

They all have Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4 and ALL updates
from the Windows Update site installed on them.

I have installed all of the newest available drivers from DELL for all
components; including: Chipset, NICs, Video, etc. (as of 8/16/04)

They all have the same issue:

When installing a the Dell provided USB floppy disk drive module that will
install in the CD-ROM bay or via USB, or any corporate provided Sony digital
cameras on to the laptops USB 2.0 ports, I get the following error message:
"The installation failed because a function driver was not specified for
this device instance". After a whole day reading various website's ideas on
resolution, and I have yet to get anything that even resembled a solution.

I am frustrated and could use some help.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Please install the Windows 2000 update for USB2.0 support

To install USB 2.0 support in Windows 2000, follow these steps:
Visit the following Microsoft Windows Update Web site:
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Click Windows Update Catalog. If Windows Update Catalog does not appear,
click the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article, and then follow the
instructions to add it:
235263 WINUP: How to Use the Personalize Button on the Windows Update Site

Click Find driver updates for hardware devices.
Click Other hardware.
In the Manufacturer name box, click Microsoft Corporation.
In the Operating System box, click Windows 2000 Professional RTM.
Click Search.
Download the driver that is named "NEC usb software update released on June
01 2001."
Note The size of the Windows 2000 version of this driver is 107 KB. The
Microsoft Windows XP version of this driver is 290 KB.

The files in this update include:

Date Time Version Size File name
------------------------------------------------------------
23-Apr-2002 22:46 5.0.2195.5652 135,920 Usbport.sys
18-Apr-2002 23:46 5.0.2195.5605 49,392 Usbhub20.sys
23-Apr-2002 22:46 5.0.2195.5652 19,216 Usbehci.sys
07-May-2002 16:52 7,159 Usb2.inf

18-Apr-2002 23:46 5.0.2195.5605 6,416 Hccoin.dll

After you install this driver and restart your computer, the USB 2.0
controller and device are listed correctly in Device Manager. If you do not
install this update, the USB 2.0 device is listed and functions, but the
device does not work at full USB 2.0 speed.

Microsoft has released this update to provide additional functionality in
Windows 2000.

Currently, only EHCI host controllers that have the following hardware IDs
are supported by this update:
NEC (NEC PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller B0, NEC PCI to USB Enhanced
Host Controller B1)
PCI\VEN_1033&DEV_00E0&REV_01
PCI\VEN_1033&DEV_00E0&REV_02
Intel (Intel PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller)
PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24CD
VIA (VIA PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller)
PCI\VEN_1106&DEV_3104
NOTE : The Microsoft USB 2.0 driver may not be listed as an available
update if third-party USB 2.0 drivers are installed on your computer. You
may have to remove the third-party USB 2.0 drivers, and then install the
Microsoft USB 2.0 driver from the Windows Update Web site. For additional
information about USB 2.0 support, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
USB 2.0 and Windows

I'm having this same exact problem. It began after a
system reset. When the machine rebooted it couldn't see my
usb printer. A check in device manager showed the USB
device with the exclaimation point. I reinstalled the
driver from WU, then tried uninstalling/reinstalling the
printer driver, but it still refuses to load the USB
driver. I get the same message:

"The installation failed because a function driver was not
specified for this device instance".

I checked my USB2 driver and it's fine (6/1/01) version.
Any other suggestions are greatly appreciated.

TIA,
Mike Mone

I tried to use the following information and I am having trouble getting the
computer to take the drivers.
or else they are not solving the problem, because I am still having the same
issue even after I have installed the driver.
