USB Device Will Not Work!

I have a Simpletech External Drive (500gb) that works just fine!
(Knock on wood) It is a silver one that stands upright. It is about
one year old. I recently purchased another Simpletech External Drive
(also 500gb) that will not work at all. It is a "pininfarina" style
drive but the specs are the same for both drives! When I first plugged
it in, my system "found new hardware" but then would not install it. I
have received many error messages (about drivers and configuration)
and I simply can't figure this out! Why does one drive work fine and a
brand new one won't work at all? I am running XP SP1 and all updates
are current. Any help is appreciated!

Could try using it on another's computer.

I see the HD is a USB 2.0 unit - do you have USB 2.0?

You state you have SP1 - Does the drive need SP2?

These are just WAGs but may spark a solution.

I am afraid to shut the power off without using the "safely remove
harware" tool... I shut down an external drive once before by simply
hitting the power switch and lost EVERYTHING on the drive! (luckily
there wasn't that much on it of any importance!) The drive that isn't
working has been ON since I first tried to install it....

Yes.. the other Simpletech Drive that is working is using a USB 2.0.

I have no idea... how do I find out? Couldn't find any info at the MS
website...

Thanks for your help!

I have one USB hard drive device that requires that the drive be power on
BEFORE I plug it into an usb port. If I plug it into the port and then turn
the power on the drive isn't accessible. So try turning off the power to the
drive and unplug it from the computer. Then turn on the power to the drive
and plug the usb cable into the computer. See it that works. While it is
most correct to use the stop device function you should be able to do a hot
swap without data loss. USB sticks are more critical than hard drive
enclosures in my experience. By the way I have 8 hard drive enclosures from
different manufacturer's that I that I use routinely none are Simpletech
though.

*************UPDATED POST!!!***************
Could try using it on another's computer.

I did and it worked perfectly... and the other computer was running
SP2! (I had SP1!)

Well I went ahead and updated to SP2 and guess what? The drive turned
on and is working perfectly! Never would have thought that was the
problem!

These are just WAGs but may spark a solution.

Thanks again for your suggestions! BTW, what are WAGs?

Maybe the system thinks it`s the same one - have you tried installing
with the original one plugged in ?
