being new to XP I hope this is not a silly Q.

I connected my scanner and camera to my PC via USB and loaded drivers etc
and all worked fine. I then installed a 4 port USB PCI card and reconnected
these items, the hardware wizard ran and detected "new" hardware and then
loaded the drivers etc.

I have 2 problems.

1. the scanners is listed as "scanner #2" in hardware profiles and in
control panel, imaging devices. The same has occurred for the camera. Why
is this? I have tried uninstall/reinstall and it still lists as #2.

2. The scanner used to initialise immediately after I started up, now it
initialises a few minutes later and if I try opening control panel, or some
applications, they appear to hang until the scanner initialises. once this
occurs all works fine till next reboot.

Maybe, just start over. Rt click on MyComputer>Select
Properties>Hardware>Device Manager. Navigate to
the Devices and uinstall them. Remove the PCI Card and uninstall it from
Device Manager. Boot WinXP with
None of the stuff installed. Then shutdown reinstall the Card and the
Devices and let WinXP reinstall them.

thanks Rich Barry for the advice. done and to no avail. I still have
problem with scanner not initialising straight away and the devices are
still listed as [device] #2 in device manager. Is there a place to manually
delete USB devices that have been connected/drivers loaded but now not
connected?

I have resolved the [device]#2 issue by restoring to a point prior to
installing the pci hub and then reinstalling devices. I still have to
resolve why it takes a while for the scanner to initialise after start up?
Is there a log or application I can use to determine what is going on and
when?

I restored to a point prior to installing the pci USB hub and then reloaded
all USB drivers OK but initialisation was still slow. I looked in the event
viewer and noticed that at start up there was a warning code 1007 dhcp. I
then did a search an discocvere that one of my network connections had dhcp
assigned ip but since it was not connected there was a delay befor auto
assingment. Set static IP's for all n/w adaptors and no problem now ;-)
