USB Device problems

I have a couple of USB devices, (Canon S100, webcam), that
XP detects and installs fine if they're plugged straight
into the motherboard USB port. If I use a hub, the hub is
detected fine, but some devices plugged into them will
not, like the two devices above. Why?

Also, a USB device, like my printer, can work fine for a
while, then the next time I log in, it doesn't connect up
and I have to reboot to connect it. Why?

Should I get a PCI USB NEC based 2.0 card? And also, I
have two USB port on the motherboard. When I look in
system/device manager, I have about five each of the USB
controllers, hubs, etc listed. Should I delete them all
and let Windows try and detect them all again? Maybe
there's some sort of conflcit going on.

USB and XP don't seem to work too well.

I have a scanner HP6100c, Webcam & Digital camera running through a generic
external hub with a CF Card reader attached to a seperate MB USB connector.
There is no problem with any of the devices! This is under XP Pro SP1 and
also W2K SP4 (on seperate drive).

If you are having USB issues it is not necessarily an XP problem - there are
too many other variable to look first to the OS as the problem.

FWIW,

The cheaper USB hubs often are not powered and devices that
need 5 volts to initialize won't run. The port on the
computer can support "up to 127 daisy-chained" but won't
power them all at once, you need powered hubs.

My hub is powered. Worked fine with Windows 98. Also, I
can have a USB device hooked straight into the MB, and
give it time, XP will cease seeing it and I have to
reboot. I went into device manager and turned off the
power down on hibernation option for the USB root hub (all
three that XP sees for some reason). I'll see what this
does.
