Windows 2k Service pack 4

If this is not the Newsgroup please someone tell me. I
post about 5 days ago and no one responded.

I have installed a USB Hub. I recieve a message saying
that the device is not known. I try to update the driver
and recieve a message that "The installation failed
beceause a function driver was not found for this device
instance"

I have used the hub on 2 other machines and it works fine
on both of them one of which is wind2K no sp4

Please tell me how to intall this hub or what I am doing
wrong.

Many Thanks

This message usually means that you attempt to install a driver not intended for win2000
(for example, for win98 or Me). Make sure you use correct driver files.

Thank you for your reply. I recieve this message when I
am look for new drivers on the device manager menu. All
of my other USB Device are reconized and work fine. I
have looked for drivers for Generic USB hubs on the
Mircrosoft site but have found none.

Do you have any ideas

Thanks Bob

If you do browse to driver fies and then get this error: the files are wrong.
Get correct files, or try Windows Update.

If you get this error with no action from your side (you don't browse and point it to the driver
files etc, the message just pops up ) - a wrong INF may sit somewhere in your system.
Then you need somebody experienced to find it and correct the problem for you.
Don't tamper with the INF directory or registry, you'll only make it worse and harder to fix.

Good luck

This is the messege after I have done the Windows Update.
I go through the update process and it tells me that it
has found better drivers I install them and then I am told
that the install failed because of the message below. I
would think that this would bypass the inf file in order
to overwrite them.

Thanks for all of your help.

Bob.

It still seems like a wrong INF (from win98?) sits somewhere in your system.
Thus - 2nd variant from my prev. reply :(
