I have a strange problem that I have a hard time solving. It seems
Windows has entered a mode where it can only connect to my camera
through a USB hub, not directly without the hub.

1. I plug in my digital camera into my PC through a USB cable.
Everything works.

2. I plug in a USB hub into my PC. It works.

3. I plug the cam into the hub, now my PC can connect to the cam
through the hub. No prob.

4. Then I try to connect the cam directly to the PC again. Doesnt work
anymore. I get "USB device not recognized". Still I can connect to the
cam through the hub, no problem.

So theres no hardware problem, all devices work perfectly. But only in
one stupid configuration.

Ive reinstalled the camera drivers, no change.

My cam is a Nikon D80, supports USB 2.0. The hub is a USB 1 hub. My PC
has USB 2.0 connectors.

Would be very happy if someone can point me in a good direction for a
solution.

If not using USB how do you directly plug your cam into your PC?

Im using USB all the time. What I mean by directly connecting to my
cam is that I dont connect it though the USB hub.

Hubs are a lot weaker than using a straight USB connection. By changing from
one thing to another you are confusing WindowsXP which has a hard time
keeping up with drive changes. If you assign a permanent drive letter(s) way
down the alphabet, XP should work ok, maybe. It's a common problem with
numerous types of fixes which don't all work for everyone. You may find
