Dear all,

have a urgent question. I have XP Pro, and have scanner and printer
and memory card reader, etc. plugged in a usb 2,0 hub, all working
before of course.

then this weekend, I did a windows update and applied some of the
patches, and all of a sudden, my scanner is not being recognized, my
card reader is not recognized, strange enough, my printer is
recognised but as if a new device. I then of course restore the
system back to a couple of weeks ago when I know everything is working
- no luck, everything is still not recognized.

I tried installed the driver manually, no luck. the system don't even
know what devices those are.

does anyone have this problem? please help.

david

dear all,

few things I have tried to no effect.

1) I have noticed that all my usb 1.1 devices are ok, but not the 2.0
devices, even though they all work before.

2) I have uninstalled all the root hub and controllers in safe mode -
windows came back and found all the hubs and controllers, including
all the 1.1 devices, but when I plug in the 2.0 devices, both of them
(scanner and memory card reader) show up as unknown device

3) I have updated all the latest bios and drivers - no help

4) tried to applied some of the usb related patches I can find in the
microsoft support site - no help

Beginning to wonder if there is a specific windows usb 2 driver that
is corrupted, and it's preventing windows to reinstall the right
driver, if anyone can point me to the right file, that would be great.

thanks.

Posted this previously concerning USB2.0.not sure any one read it.. SP1 in
place?...Do NOT download any other drivers etc for this from any other site.
Most importantly; check your hardware configuration to see if you have an
'enhanced' USB controller listed in there, if not, you can try re-installing
your PCI card and see if that does it. the key word is 'enhanced', if it
isn't there, you don't have USB2.0 working..

dear all,

some new info to share, and may be this is a little closer in solving
the problem.

recap: my usb2.0 devices are showing up as unknown deviced in device
manager, have tried everything including deleting root hub and host
controller.... windows came back and recognised everything except for
the 2.0 devices (which include a usb memory reader, and a scanner)

have also applied the latest patches of everything....... and most
importantly, all these things at one point worked on this system, and
I think it's after some windows update that this thing start failing.

new info:

This is where it gets interesting. If I delete just the usb host
controller (sis enhance controller) then the system will immediately
recongised the usb memory reader and the scanner, but will of course
tells me that I am plugging usb 2 devices into usb 1.0 ports. What
this tells me is that the hw and the devices are all working, and
there is something wrong with the software configuration....

I have tried to apply a good version of the usbehci.sys driver, tried
to clean up all existing usbehci.sys files except for the one in
systmer32/drivers directory. I have updated that file to the latest
from microsoft, which is version 1243. none of these helped. As soon
as I re-enable the enhanced usb host controller in device manager, the
usb member reader and scanner will become unknown device again.

so close.... and still so frustrating. Well, at least I can do a
temporary get around when I need to.....

any thought to this?

You may have tried this but it worked for me in a similar situation. I
unplugged all of the USB devices. Then I deleted the devices and hub from
the device manager. Then I rebooted letting it find the hub again. Then
I plugged in each USB device one at a time and it discovered them fine.

having had similar problems in XP with USB 2.0, I fully agree with this
man, that this is the only way to get this to work. It is tedious to unplug
and re-plug etc but i think he is right on.
Afterthought; i had a problem with the cheapo PCI USB2.0 card i had
bought and that was a big part of the problem also. I bought a $49 Belkin
card and the thing sprang to life..Don't know if that would fit your
situation(?)

Peter, Dave,

thanks for suggestion, but I have also tried that a number of times,
deleting things one by one, root hub first, then controller.... then
also tried to delete things in safe mode as well.... any other
suggestions will be appreciated.

the one thing that gets me the most is that all these devices were
working fine and great, and then all of a sudden (believe after one
windows update) I have this problem, depite trying to restore the
system to an earlier date. It's as if some magic thing happen and I
am in USB doom land.

The only USB-killing issues I know of are side-effects from
Adaptec/Roxio bugware CD writing sware in Win98, and USB power issues
(you know, those "doesn't need power" items that always have a
discreet 9V input somewhere on the back nonetheless).

I have the same exact problem. None of the USB devices are being recognized. It seems to have started right after I did a windows update on February 3. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
