USB data devices hanging pc when connected

When I connect a USB data device/ipod the pc hangs and I have to manually
reboot. This has only just started to happen however dosen't affect USB
devices such as Web Cam, mouse. All of the data devices work on other PCs. I
operate XP Pro on a Fujitsu amilo D1840W.

I am working through a similar problem. My problem occured when plugging a
high-speed USB device into a non high-speed port. I added a USB 2.0 card to
my PC and reinstalled all my USB drivers. It fixed my MP3 player, but my PC
still crashes when trying to backup to an external USB hard drive. Hope this
helps.

Cheers for responding. My Laptop is fully USB twoed up and seems to be having
problems powering devices. I have come up with a workaround which is a self
powered USB 2.0 docking station. Since this powers the devices, only data is
required to pass through the ports. My external drive is now working better
than ever, even if it did cost £15 on ebuyer to work around it. My ipod is
also happy now and I've gained an extra four USB 2.0, a Parellel port, a
Serial port and an ethernet port. Hope this helps.
