This is a really old computer (128 MB RAM Pentium II 233
MHZ). I had the operating system upgraded to Windows 2000
Professonal. I cannot use the USB ports. There is a "!"
sign next to "Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host
Controller" when I tried the device manager. The error
message I got is "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".

Can anyone help me recover my USB ports?

1. Install the USB host drivers from the motherboard company
or from Intel.

2. You must have Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 installed for
Windows 2000 to see the USB ports.

.

I wish it was as easy as you suggested. Here is more
information:

Motherboard: Aopen AX6L R1.40d

USB host: Intel 440LX Chipset (Intel 82371 AB/EB PCI to USB
Universal Host Controll)

Current driver: Microsoft 5.0.2195.6717

The website of Aopen does not have driver-download for the
USB host. When I checked the Intel website, it has drivers
for USB2. Intel suggested (on the web) for USB1 I should go
to Microsoft. I am not sure if there is any new driver for
me to download.

I found some information related to my problem from
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 297511 (Code 10-the
device cannot start). The resolution the article suggested
is to disable the DOS USB function in the system BIOS. When
I checked the BIOS, USB wasn't even mentioned anywhere. I
am really hesitated to play with the BIOS. What should I do???

Correction. Only for USB 2.x ports. Didn't apply to your USB 1.x port.

Go to BIOS setup and turn off the Legacy USB Keyboard setting.
Your Motherboard manual says you can't have both Legacy USB
Keyboard and a USB driver in your system at the same time.
As per AX6L-AWD.PDF (page 3.32) in ax6lp.exe manuals file.

Disabling this setting should allow Windows to see the USB port.

Hope it solves the problem.

My fault, I was thinking USB2. So you don't need the chip drivers.

Here is the original settings under "Integrated
Peripherals" in BIOS:

"The USB Legarcy Support" was set to "disable". "The USB
IRQ REleased" was set to "Yes".

Should I do anything about it?
