USB connections

Hi. when I plug in any new usb devices the balloon pops up and says "found
new hardware" the wizard then comes on and attempts to install but after
trying, the message "An error occured during installation of the device. The
data is invalid" I have tried several devices mp3 players etc but they all
say the same even when using the disc that came with the device. All my old
mp3 players etc work as soon as they are plugged in.I am using XP on a
Packard Bell easynote. Any suggestions appreciated.
