I just bought a new phone and tried to connect it to my PC
running 2000 Pro/SP3. I get the following message when it
tries to load the driver -

An error occured during the installation of this device

The installation failed because a function driver was not
specified for this device instance

So basically the install fails.

What am I missing to complete this installation?

Couple of questions.

Is the USB phone automatically detected or are you just trying to manually
install the driver?

Do you have other USB devices that work correctly?

Does device manager show any problems with your root USB?

Both, either way, I get the message. Right now, I am
trying to manually install the driver, as it shows up
missing from the Device Manager> Universal Serial Bus
Controllers + , It shows up there as the device, but
when I look at the properties, it says that the drivers
for this device are not installed. The icon has a
yellow ! sign, of course.

Yes, I had an MP3 player (iRiver) that I loaded MP3's on
just about 2 weeks ago. Have not tryied anything over the
USB since.
