I have a scanner and a digital camera which was working fine on my
Win2000.

I bought a name card scanner and installed it but encountered some
problems. It says:

"An error occurred during the installation of the device.
The name is already is use as either a service name or a service
display name."

I went to the registry to search and found:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\usbscan" with a
key "DisplayName = USB Scanner Driver".

So I change to:

"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\usbscan - xxx"
with a key "DisplayName = USB Scanner Driver - xxx".

And the card scanner installation went through OK.

But now, I cannot use both my scanner and digital camera. Both have
the same error "An error occurred during the installation of the
device. The name is already is use as either a service name or a
service display name."

Any advise ?

I have just obtained a film scanner. I also have an ordinary flatbed
scanner. Will there be a conflict (either software or hardware) if both are
connected to the computer at the same time, or even when changing from one
to the other?

In the two scanners thread in this NG, I posted the following:
You will have a problem if you are running WinXP and both scanners are USB.
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;324756&Product=winxp

It appears this is exactly the situation this article addresses.

NO. I've read the article. This is not my situation. I'm not using
XP and I'm not connecting them simultaneously. Any ideas ? THanks.

Anyone solved this problem ?
I saw quite a number of similar posting but don't seem to have an answer.
Thanks.

Try these links to Microsoft support knowledge base, maybe an answer in
there somewhere... There is several issues with scanners, usb and Window XP.

Yes. I assume you're suing Win XP for this though:

1. Use the XP disk management tools to force USB devices to use Drive
letters.

- Select Start/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/computer Management
- Right click on the drive you want to give a letter to and select
"Change Drive letter and paths" and give it a letter.

2. Map the drive to drive B using the above technique. If the drive
is plugged into the same slot every time this works and makes use of
the redundant drive letter.
