Is there a maxium length for USB cable before you get problems, I want to
run a USB mouse and keyboard using about a 3 meters of USB cable?

Any ideas?

The spec doesn't dictate a maximum length, only the maximum allowed
propagation delay and signal attenuation. The maximum cable delay is 26 ns
/ 18 ns (high speed / low speed) and propagation delay is typically 3 ns/m.
That would suggest a limit of around 8m / 6m; but signal attenuation affects
the limit which is dependent on signal properties. Stay under 5m and you
should have any problems. You can find the USB 2.0 Specification at
www.usb.org/developers/docs.

The longest I've seen are about 12 feet in length -- why
not consider a wireless KB and mouse -- LogiTech has a
decent product.

One of the biggest problems with USB cables is the dc voltage drop because
USB supplies power down the cable. 5m is generally considered to be the
maximum practical length but, if the peripheral is not taking any power, it
could be longer.
