is there a rough rule of thumb as to how far a usb cable can be before
it is not possible to to effectively transfer data? I have a device
that needs to connect to the computer via a usb port and the computer
if 15 feet away and am posting the above question.

Sincerely, Aaron

My 3-in-one printer, scanner, copier is on an extended 30' cable and has
been going fine for a couple of years. The rule of thumb is a max of about
20-25', but some will tolerate longer distances and some will not. Give it a
go and see how it works.
