I connect my Win2000 PC to a cable modem and access to the
internet is fine. When I connect the PC's NIC to my router
to access my home intranet, I lose the connection to the
cable modem. Is there some way to connect my PC to the
internet using the USB and to my home intranet using the
NIC? Thanks much for any help!!!

Yes, just connect both. Assign the cable modem IP
as the default gateway in the NIC's TCP/IP properties, and leave
the default gateway blank for the USB TCP/IP properties.

Network traffic destined for the home LAN will go out the NIC,
and all other (Internet) traffic will be directed out the USB
port to the cable modem.

None of this gets you to sharing the cable modem connection BTW.
You can turn on ICS to do this (depending on your ISP and
cable modem setup). The more "usual" way is to connect
your router behind the cable modem and plug everything
in to that. Again, it depends on the kind of connections and
protocols you are dealing with -- if that's what you want to
do, try reposting with more details.
