I have twice tried to plug in Delorme Earthmate GPS LT-20 which has caused
reboot. Could this have caused any system problems that may not be obvious
right away and is this something to be suspicious of with any USB device
from now on or is there a defect in hardware? This is one of the newest
models out and am wondering if I should be concerned.

Thanks

Check in the Device Manager under the USB section and disable the
error correction. It's never needed IMHO and seems to cause
problems. Also in XP/Right Click on My
Computer/Properties/Advanced/Startup and Recovery and disable
the,"Automatic Restart" again for the same reasons above.
HTH :)

Yes this has answered my curiosity. I was wondering why this was the only
device that causes this and what could be the difference between any other
USB connection like a camera for example.

Thank you Shep for your help.

I have found that these setting were already as you suggested so I am back
to the original difficulty but I don't see it as a bad thing as long as I
realize I must make use the system is off before connecting this device.

Thanks again.
