I am encountering the problem detailed in Knowledge Base article 312370 i.e. the system refuses to support a hi-speed USB device

According to the knowledge base article USB2 support was included in SP1. However, I am running SP1 and the system is fully up to date with critical updates. Any suggestions?

USB 2 requires both USB 2 hardware and software. Is your USB port hardware
USB 2? If not, and you have a desktop with an available PCI slot, you can
add a multi-port USB 2 PCI card for your USB 2 devices. Note, however, that
any USB 1.1 devices you have will not become USB 2 by plugging them into a
USB 2 port. The device hardware must also change to USB {that is you buy a
new USB 2 device}.

I had a similar problem, I believe, and managed to get
around it by not "automatically" installing the device,
but telling it I had the disk, then browsing to the
Windows/inf folder and using the appropriate inf file (in
my case, it was usbstor.inf). Interestingly, after doing
so, it asked for the usbstor.sys file, which I found out
was in the "windows/servicepackfiles/i386" folder. It
seems that this was the file it kept looking for and
couldn't find. So maybe that's what's happening with you.
I would suggest putting a copy of the i386 folder into the
inf folder and seeing what happens (if anything).
