I set-up new printer with USB 2.0. Windows stated the
printer connection will default to USB standard as the
controller was not USB 2.0. I am running XPpro sp1. How ?
do I correct this problem/

Not really a problem. Usb 2.0 is still new, most old"er"
computers do not have usb 2.0. The printer should still
work fine, just won't be as fast as it would be if your
USB on your motherboard was 2.0. There are usb 2.0 cards
that you can buy at stores.

Install a USB 2.0 card in the computer after adding the drivers provided by
the card manufacturer. You can't turn a USB 1.1 port into a USB 2.0 port
simply by changing the drivers. The hardware is physically different.

Yes, and if the hardware, the USB port is only USB 1.1 compliant, then your
printer will only work in USB 1.1 mode. Hence, as others have responded,
you need to acquire a USB 2.1 add-in card and install it on your system
assuming you have a free PCI slot on your board.

I should not need an add-in card. According to the
specifications the ASUS A7N8X Deluxe motherboard boasts 6
USB 2.0 ports. I am thinking I need upgraded drives for
the usb controllers. I reached a dead end with Mircosoft
and ASUS. Any other ideas?

OK, you should have specified that upfront.

Yes, I agree, with your assessment, about the drivers for the host
controller and that would have to come from the device manufacturer. If
that doesn't resolve it, even though the printer is new, check the
manufacturer's web set for updated drivers. Drivers change fast, you have
no way of knowing how long the printer was on the shelf or in the warehouse
before you purchased it and drivers for the printer may have been updated in
the interim. Dated drivers could result in a message that indicates the
host controller is the issue when in fact it's a communication issue due to
dated printer drivers.
