I'd like to upgrade to USB 2.0 and am looking for a USB 2.0/Firewire
combo PCI card.

There are many out there at many difference prices.

Is there a significant difference (other than number of ports) between
different cards? I've been trolling through the archives and haven't
found an answer to that question.

Please give me some advice or guidance on a worry-free card to use
with an XP machine.

Thanks,

Joel

There is no card (any type) that is worry-free, with-in Windows. That said,
I would only look at USB 2/Firewire card from larger, known manufacturers.
I do believe that Adaptec makes USB and Firewire ports. They also update
their drivers regularly.

Your advice of going with a well-known brand is good, but it is a big
jump between the $20 generics and the $65 adaptec. Is there a middle
ground that anyone is happy with? Will I really see a difference
(other than potential for imcompatibility which is not so worrisome
since I at least find the problem out of the box) in performance or
drag on system resources? What do you get for the extra 250% price?

Make sure the Firewire card has support for all six wires in
each port and that the card has power. Some Firewire cards
even have a direct to the power supply connection and don't
depend on the PCI slot.
I have heard that Ti Firewire wire chipsets are good.
If you have or intend to have front panel ports, get a card
with internal as well as external ports.

| On the USB2 side, any card that uses the NEC chip; for
Firewire, don't
| know.
