USB 2.0 troubles

Chris

Good Evening,

Have been having trouble connecting a NetDisk mass
storage to my USB port. Each time I connect, I receive
an error saying that I have connected a high speed device
to a non-high speed port. Device manager says everything
is okay, all the diagnostics check out, and when I
connect the same drive to my wife's identical laptop, it
connects just fine.

I've reinstalled the drivers and have been talking to the
tech support at both Dell and Ximeta (NetDisk). So far
nothing.

Does anyone know what to do?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Make sure USB 2.0 is enabled in the BIOS, also you need SP1.

The reason I mentioned the BIOS, my Intel mobo (D845GBVL
with 6 USB 2,0 ports and the Intel BIOS has several USB
settings). They were not on USB 2.0 by default.

Try deleting all the USB ports, hubs and devices and
rebooting. Then reinstall each device clean.

| Yep, SP1 installed, nothing to set in the BIOS.
|
| Next idea?

You don't specifically state that your Dell computer has USB 2.0 ports
available. A Dell that is more than about 15 months old probably does not
have a 2.0 port but is only 1.1.

What is the model number of your Dell? If you still have your original
invoice, check it for the USB ports and see if it specifies USB 2.0. If not
you have 1.1 ports. Some Dells have USB 1.1 ports in one location and 2.0
ports in a different location on the box. Read your documentation to make
sure you are plugging into the correct ports.

If you find that you only have 1.1 ports on your machine, purchase an PCI
add-in card which supplies 2.0 ports (may consider one with IEEE 1394 ports
as well for digital camera connection.)

Sorry about that, yes this is a Dell 5100, just purchased
with USB 2.0 ports on the back side.

Any ideas yet?

Ask Dell?

Been emailing them for a week. No such luck. I've also
been emailing Ximeta. They say it may be a chipset
conflict, but that doesn't explain why the other laptop
works just fine.

Chris

Dell has toll free 24/7 live tech support, you paid for it,
use it.
