I am not sure if this is the best place to ask this, but here goes....

I have Win XP Home fully updated. About three months ago, I bought a 16 gig
USB thumb drive. It was very fast backing up data. Lately, it is much
slower. I have been using the same USB port all the time.

Can anyone offer what could cause this type of slow-down, and what could I
do to get this storage device to work at its original speed??

Thank you

This looks like a good way to measure speed. But I know my speed has
changed. Files that took a few seconds to back up to the USB drive now
take much longer. I wondered if some setting had been changed and what I
could do to reset it.

Just a thought. Unless you format the thumb drive frequently it might be
becoming fragmented. I seem to recall reading that is a problem with thumb
drives and compact flash cards.

Speed test should not be affected by
heavy fragmentation. Hopefully one of
these utilities may also provide additional
information (Like USB speed, drive integrity)

This shouldn't be a problem. There are no moving parts so seek time is
effectively zero. However, I have had thumb drives go south on me so perhaps
a clean format and error check is wise.
