Just bought a new USB 2 external hard drive and an A7V8X-MX to
upgrade my office computer. The CDrom
that came with the mobo has an "install US2 driver" on it, but when I
go to install it, I get the following message: "MS Update lists all
available updates on the web. We suggest you to download WinXP service
pack 1 because MS drivers are included."

Well, my office computer is NOT hooked up to the web. I prefer not to
install Service Pack 1 because I am not hooked to the web (why does MS
always assume that every computer in the world is web-connected) and
so I do not have any security issues. I don't want to install all
kinds of stuff I don't need. The simpler the better IMHO. It's been
working well now for almost a year and I want it to stay that way.

All I want are the drivers. Even if I am forced to install Service
Pack 1, I can't find out how to manually d/l that file on this, my
home computer so that I can hand-carry it to my office for
installation there. Everytime I try to download it, it tells my I've
already installed it.

The Asus site does not have WinXP USB 2.0 drivers yet.

Why does everything have to be so complicated? Just the drivers, man,
that's all I want.

If you use Windows Catalog, you sould be able to download SP-1 and
burn it to a CD. As I recall, it's about 137 MB.

For a downloadable installer for SP1,

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp?corporate=true

It's a bit large - shows up as 137 MB. If you are on a dialup
connection, you may prefer to get it on a CD. (It's available for a
fairly nominal charge from Microsoft, or on the CDs bundled with some
computer magazines.)

It may be your best option, though. In the past I've gone directly to
the chipset maker for drivers. VIA states that they do not make USB2
drivers for XP available for download due to licensing restrictions. The
suggestion is that Asus should have included the drivers on their CD.

Good luck.

Between the original WinXP and XP SP1, there was a quick fix for USB2
called QFE #312370. It is 6852KB and the only reason it is that large
is because it supports multiple languages. It may be possible to unzip
it and just take the installer for the language of your choice to work
with you. I have no idea whether this is complete USB2 support or
just basic support.

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/Detail_Desc.asp?agr=N&ProductID=890&DwnldID=5552

or this link, which has had the QFE download removed, due to the
existence of SP1 no doubt:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;312370

Do some research on 312370, because sometimes applying QFEs may upset
the later installation of a service pack. I've never used a QFE, so
cannot advise on that aspect.

Some basic USB info is here, including mention of the filenames
of the USB driver files:

On the other hand, XP SP1 was included on the CDs you find on the cover of
your favourite computer magazines.
