Is it possible to use a USB 2.0 Flash Drive in my XP
machine with only USB 1.1 capability? When I plug it in,
the "system" says that it will operate at reduced speed
(which is OK) but it doesn't show in Explorer and shows
as a problem in Device Manager. All the latest patches
from MS have been installed. This thing worked fine on
my older laptop running ME.

I assume this happens when you plug the flash drive into
any USB ports of your portable. You did not state the
brand of your flash drive. SanDisk and Lexar usually do
not give problems, but other lesser-known brands may not
work so well. Your best bet is to check the website of
the flash drive manufacturer for technical information.
The price difference between a name-brand and a no-name
device is not so much for flash drives.

After plugging in the flash device, select the "Add
hardware" applet in the control panel. The wizard will
search for devices that are not detected by standard Plug-
and-Play. You may be lucky and detect the flash drive at
this point.

Depending on the age of your portable, a BIOS upgrade may
solve USB problems. This occurs quite often for PC's and
portables more than 2 years old.
