hello,
when attempting to load the drivers for the above adapter,
Windows is "looking" for the .sys file during "New
hardware installation" when, according to the manufacturer
(D-LINK), it should be looking for the .inf file. It locks
out any other file extension except .sys. How can I get it
to load the correct driver?
Computer is brand new, runs XP Home w/sp1.

thanks

Is XP supposed to have the appropriate driver or should the driver be
installed from an installation CD *before* attaching the device the
first time? Hardware installation in XP is frought with spurious
results if the wrong procedure is attempted.

Q

the instructions specify to install the adapter to the USB
port and ethernet cable to hub or router and then "the
computer should automatically detect" the adapter. Then it
states to insert the installation CD and continue with the
automatic install. I attempted this the first time. I've
tried removing and reinstalling, but there is no driver to
remove. I've tried installing only the software from the
CD but all it has is the drivers, no installation software.
still no go.

thanks.

How about plugging in the adapter, then cancel the hardware install routine
where it wants the sys file. Navigate to the CD using Windows Explorer and right
click the *.inf file in the appropriate directory for WindowsXP. In the popup
menu should be "Install." Select that and go.

Don't do that. Device drivers can not be installed this way.

USB in this area is tenuous at best. Take the thing back
to the store and get a 10/100/1000 NIC for less then $20.

I guess I should have added a disclaimer. Thanks for noting that. The reason I
suggested it was that the normal install was not working for some reason. I
guess the later advice I read this morning was much better - return the adapter
and buy a different one.

:)

The following REG adds this option to driver INF files :D

---- cut here---
REGEDIT4
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\inffile\shell\trash]
@="&Trash it and go buy new one"
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\inffile\shell\trash\command]
@="cmd /c start http://www.ebay.com"
---- cut here---
