Windows XP Pro. Device Manager shows I am VIA enhanced USB 2.0 enabled.
When I plug my first 2.0 USB card reader into a USB slot which looks the
same as the others as the item comes with a USB cable that is the same as a
1.1 cable (is this right?). My computer recognises the item as High Speed
but says it is in a low speed port. As theUSB port fits the cable exactly,
what the hell is going on. There is another port shaped differently but the
cable from device does not fit it.

Please help ...

what mainboard are your using and does it have a 1.1 and a 2.0 USB header and Which of those are you plugging into?

M/B is a V400DB or DBL (not sure which). Not sure what you mean by 1.1/2.0
USB header. Is this something I need to manipulate in Device Manager?

no, there are currently many boards that have both versions of USB on board. 2.0 being 'highspeed'. some configurations will have
1.1 ports that are OB and another 'header' (connector) for front or a PCI expansion slot plate with 2 or more ports of the 2.0
version.

Ok so as you can see this version had 6X2.0 so i would say its a driver problem. I heard that VIA has new hyperions out and they
may have USB 2.0 updates. If not there then the jetway site may have...also possible bios update BE SURE OF THE MODEL BEFORE THAT !!
please ;^)

Do you have WinXP SP1 installed? It must be.

Is the card reader listed under the "VIA enhanced USB 2.0 enabled" driver
entry in Device manager?

USB 1.1 and 2.0 cables are the same.

By any chance are you using a front panel USB connector? If so, have you tried
the USB connectors on the rear panel of the motherboard? Some older cases have a
filter on the front panel USB connector which degrades the USB2.0 performance.

Good point. I forgot that one system I had used an excessively long cable
from the motherboard to the front panel connectors. This system only worked
in USB 1.1 mode with the front connector due to the long cable. The rear
connectors worked in USB 2.0 mode just fine.

Very simple solution!! I have 4 USB ports (2 front and 2 back). 3 of them
are 1.1 and one (on the back) is USB 2.0.

Needless to say I had tried 3, then in desperation tried no 4 - Hey Presto,
succcess. ...and it is worth the trouble!!

Thanks for the help guys!
