I have a new computer that came with 6 or 8 usb ports. I believe they are the
2.0 type, though for the life of me i can't tell the difference between 2.0 and
1.1
versions. The cable seem to look alike. Can someone tell me if there is a sure
way of identifying one from the other?

Device manager should have USB 2.0 somewhere in it if they are (assuming you installed all the chipset drivers).

Dreaming frees the soul, energizes the spirit and allows you to do things that would get your ass thrown in jail if you really tried them.

If they are USB 2.0, there must have a section in the BIOS setup on which
you can select the speed of the USB ports, if you can see 2 option there 1)
Full Speed and 2) High Speed, they are USB 2.0.

Don't worry. A quality, USB 1.x compliant cable is USB 2.x compliant.
Some very cheap cables may have problems with USB High Speed (the new
mode). USB Full Speed is the old USB 1.x speed.

Seems to depend what you are doing. I connected a webcam on a 15 METRE USB cable. (Although it WAS a usb 2 cable)

It is preferential to refrain from the utilization of sesquipedalian verbiage in the circumstance that your intellectualization can be expressed using comparatively simplistic lexicological entities.

Only by reading what the maker says.

No cheap/easy one. I have to identical looking cables. One is USB 1
one is USB2 the 'slow' one produces a lot of interface errors
when used with a HDD, the fast one does not. Yet I have other
cables sold as USB 1, that work as USB 2 cvables without these
interface errors.

Interesting. A local Radioshack is trying to scam customers by selling
a USB 2.0 specified cable for $50.00 CAD. I kid you not.

Hardly surprising. Large segments of the cable business is
essentially a rip-off game. You can buy a DVD player for $50, and
they'll try to sell you $150 cables to connect it to your TV.
