First, set a restore point, NOW. Second, I believe ME came out shortly
before USB 2.0, didn't it? (trying to remember the timeline, but I think ME
was first) I'd try to get that puppy connected to the Internet somehow and
run the Windows Update utility. Unfortunately, your cable modem would be
very helpful for this, but it isn't working. My cable modem offers USB OR
Ethernet connection. Can you hook up your cable modem that way? -Dave

There are no specific 'issues' with USB 2.0 and Win Me, make sure that the drivers your loading are not XP drivers.

Not sure about the cable modem, but I've seen printer issues with USB
before. When they say they cannot see the printer it is often because
windows is checking the wrong port (LPT1). If you go into your BIOS and
disable LPT1 and then try re-installing the printer this normally sorts
it.

As an afterthought, perhaps windows is only checking your com ports for
your modem as well.
