My 4 year old XP Home PC (AMD Athlon 1800, 512 MB) has no USB 2
support. I gather I can install a card to add this facility. Could
someone tell me exactly what these are called please? My searches so
far have turned up 'USB Adapters' that appear to be merely extra
ports.

Even better would be an example of a UK supplier! I've tried my usual
Misco at http://www.misco.co.uk/ where I am still searching.

Also, will the resulting USP port have the power supply connections
that I understand USB 1 does not include, such as for charging a music
player?

Go to the site or others and search for USB PCI.

I have a similar old computer and just bought a USB 2.0 PCI card. Thats all
it is. You can buy a usb (2.0) hub for $10 - $50 if you get a card with only
two ports, which I did also.
Make sure you are using 2.0 usb cables for your new connections.
