Hi All,
After installing Windows Service Pack Express 1 yesterday,
the USB ports on the front of my computer stopped
working. (The ones in the front are USB 1.1; the ones in
the back still work and they are USB 2.0.) I contacted
Gateway twice and both of their proposed solutions
failed. First, they wanted me to change the BIOS settings
at startup such that all the USB ports were enabled. This
did not help because they already were enabled. Next,
they wanted me to reset all of my BIOS settings and run
System File Checker (sfc /scannow from the Run box). This
I was not able to do because my computer was also not
recognizing my CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drives (and Microsoft
needs to be able to read your Windows installation CD when
it is running System File Checker).
What I ended up doing was restoring my computer to a
previous point to see if it was indeed the update that had
caused this. When I restored, my USB 1.1 ports worked
again. However, is there some way that I can install the
critical updates AND somehow get my USB ports to work
again?
Does anyone have any ideas? Or do you know of a specific
update that has been doing this to USB 1.1 ports?
Thanks in advance,
Paul
